JEB Level 3 Certificate in Education Principles and Practice

This award is intended for those who want to gain the initial confidence and competence to be able to teach their specialist subject/vocational area. It also enables those who are teaching or training at present to gain a certificate, which confirms their ability to teach.

Candidates must hold a leaving certificate and ECDL Core or their equivalent. Exemption from this requirement may be given to mature candidates on written application to JEB.

Delivery and Duration

A taught course at least 70 guided learning hours. Candidates also need to spend considerable additional time consolidating their knowledge and understanding of all aspects of teaching and learning.

Content



Unit 1 Principles of Learning

The Teaching and Learning Context

Understand the teacher's role, knowledge skills and qualities needed by teachers, how and why people learn and different learning aims, needs and styles for individuals and groups, including those with special needs.

Learning Theories and Principles

Understand learning theories, definitions of learning, different kinds of learning, and the importance of language in learning. Be aware of the main factors in teaching/learning a skill and the importance of motivation, attention and memory.



Unit 2 The Learning Process

Teaching Strategies and Methods of Teaching

Understand learning objectives, how to select and design learning programmes, and the range of teaching methods and aids. Identify teaching and learning support materials, including ILT materials, and plan for the needs of potential learners.

Assessment

Understand the purpose and principles of assessment, the range of assessment methods and the need for appropriate assessment records.

Managing Teaching and Learning

Be aware of the effects of the physical environment, including health and safety and classroom layouts, factors that influence discipline and the place of out-of-class work. Understand equal opportunities and referral procedures. Manage relations with colleagues and maintain good communications.



Unit 3 Developing Own Practice

Evaluation and Developing Own Practice

Evaluate and develop own practice in order to improve the effectiveness of teaching. Understand how to improve quality and develop professionally.

Teaching Practice

After observing a session taught by a qualified teacher for at least one hour, candidates undertake four hours of teaching practice, two hours of which have to be observed and assessed by a qualified teacher.

Assessment

· An examination of one hour and 30 minutes, plus ten minutes reading time.
· Four hours teaching practice, two of which are assessed.



Qualification

JEB Level 3 Certificate in Education Principles and Practice
Is awarded to those who have successfully completed the Education Principles and Practice examination and teaching practice.

Job Prospects

A JEB Award can lead to employment with an educational organisation for example, a Further Education College, a training organisation or within the training department of a company. Candidates can also progress to other JEB courses.
